Whilst the Internet Watch Foundation operates independently of Government, we have been closely supported by the Department for Trade and Industry and the Home Office and we are now looking forward to establishing relationships with the new Ministry of Justice, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (DBERR) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
Over the past year, we have enjoyed particular support from Vernon Coaker MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Crime Reduction and are delighted this effective relationship will continue. We look forward to furthering our links with Baroness Shriti Vadera in her new roles as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Business and at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and Maria Eagle MP in her new role as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Ministry of Justice.
The Rt Hon John Hutton MP has been appointed Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, replacing the Rt Hon Alistair Darling MP. The Rt Hon Jacqui Smith MP has been appointed Secretary of State for the Home Office, replacing the Rt Hon Dr John Reid MP.
To help raise awareness of our ‘Hotline’ and further our work combating illegal content online, we aim to have our work widely embraced throughout national and local government as well as internationally.
We participate in the work of the Home Secretary's Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet and we also have close ties to the Criminal Law Policy Unit and the High Tech Crime department.
Internet Task Force working groups
The Task Force has 6 subgroups and 2 project teams that feed into the main group.
The Subgroups are:
- The Criminal Law subgroup. This role will be to consider whether the criminal law is adequate, including civil remedies.
- The Public Awareness subgroup. This role will move from overseeing Home Office campaign activity to facilitating EU Node's co-ordination role.
- The Child Protection Safety Measures subgroup. This role will continue existing work on search engines, moderators, evaluation of existing models of good practice.
- A new 'Evidence base' subgroup will be created to bring together existing information and develop a shared understanding of the risks, the key risk groups and to identify new services and bring them to the attention of the Taskforce.
- The International subgroup. It's aim is to develop international relationships to better protect children and young people online.
- The Education subgroup. This subgroup will build on the successful work of the Safe Use of ICT in Education group (SUICT).
The two finite project teams are:
- One will develop and encourage take up BSI kitemark for child safety software by June 2005.
- The other will be a Project Board, that will be overseeing development and implementation of awareness package for child protection professionals by June 2005
There will not be a law enforcement subgroup, but simply a closer relationship between the Task Force and the ACPO Combating Child Abuse on the Internet group - including regular updates.
We publish parliamentary submissions, debates and questions which are relevant to the IWF's remit in this section
